Ethel M. Potkay
NEW BEDFORD — Ethel Margaret (Nemec) Potkay, 84, of Fairhaven, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. She was the widow of Boleslaw William Potkay.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Norbert and Lily (Whittle) Nemec, she lived the past 51 years in Fairhaven. She was a communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd and a member of the Episcopal Women's Club for many years.
Mrs. Potkay was a solderer art the Aerovox Corp. and later was a ladies' handbag repairer and head of first aid at the Fairhven Corp. until retiring in 1979.
She was a graduate of Fairhaven High School. She weathered the hurricane of 1938 in the Harbor View section of Fairhaven, an experience that left a lasting impression and instilled her well-known sense of resolve and determination.
Her avocations included cooking, baking, sewing, and quilting.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen Potkay of Germantown, Md., and Craig Potkay of East Bridgewater; a sister, Ruby M. Delisolla of Medford; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren,; and nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Donaghy-Hathaway Funeral Home, 465 County St. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
