William Edward Abels was born August 1, 1848 in St. Claresville, Ohio and died January 5, 1015 in Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri at the age of 56. He was the adopted son of Oliver Alexander (Smith) Able and Matilda Ann Lee. William Edward was one-half indian. His mother was an unknown white woman who fled with William from the Indians and gave him up to the preacher Oliver and his wife Matilda.
When the Indians found out that William had been taken, they came looking for him. Matilda was hiding in a dug out under the cabin floor with William. William began to cry. Matilda then put her breast in his mouth to keep him quiet. Even though he had no milk, it kept him quiet. After this incident, the couple fled with William from Ohio to Missouri.
He married Ages Virginia Mcconnell and to this union, they had 7 children: Mollie Ables Green (1865-1944), Olivia Rachel Abels (1873-1952), Emmett Lee Abels (1875-1953), Matilda Elizabeth Abels (1878-1940), Florida Emma Abels (1885-1967), and Thomas George Abels (1887-1972).
