James was the son of John Quinlivan and Mary McCarthy. Family lore is that John died when a ferry tipped over in the River Shannon. Mary immigrated to Ontario, Canada circa 1846 with her youngest child Malachy. The last record of her is on the 1861 census. The Quinlivan family was likely from Miltown Malbay, Clare, Ireland. John Quinlivan's parents may have been Thomas Quinlivan and Mary Shannon, while Mary McCarthy's parents may have been Timothy McCarthy and Mary Sullivan. Feel free to contact Darlene Athey Hill to discuss possible family connections.

James immigrated from Ireland to Ontario in 1842. When he and his wife married, it caused quite a stir with both families -- an Irish Catholic (him) marrying a Scottish Protestant (her)! They had several children, the youngest being Ann Crerar Quinlivan (her mother's namesake). James' wife died only two days after giving birth to Ann, and James raised his daughter by himself.

Circa 1882, James moved to St. Augusta, Minnesota, where he owned and operated the Oak Grove Stock & Dairy Farm until 1900.

When his son Peter's widow (Annie) died, she left her five children to the care of James. They lived on a farm 10-12 miles from St. Cloud. The land had not turned out to be what James had expected, and it took the toil and sweat of he and his grandsons (Jim and John) to squeeze out a living. On this farm there was a little stream that bubbled out of a rocky hill. The water was clear and fresh, and visitors carried away jugs of it. On one occasion, when Father John Quinlivan (James Quinlivan's son) was visiting from Montreal, he thought the water was so wonderful that it must have medicinal values. So he had it examined. It was found that the water contained alithia in it, but not enough to sell it as a medicine. However, Father John was so impressed that he built a bath-house on the site, and whenever he came to visit, he would bathe there every day and encourage the whole family to do the same.

He died on 11 Dec 1906 in St. Augusta, MN. His obituary appeared in The Daily Times newspaper in St. Cloud, MN and reads: "The death of James Quinlivan, an aged and respected resident of this county, occured on Thursday morning at 5:15 o'clock at his home in the town of St. Augusta, where he has been a resident for the last quarter of a century. The deceased died of infirmities of old age.

"James Quinlivan was born in the town of Clair, Ireland, March 15, 1823, so that he was nearly 84 years of age. He left his native soil when he was a young man and located at Stratford, Ont. in the year 1842. In the spring of 1846 he was married to Annie Crerar, and to them were born eight children, three of whom still survive. The oldest of these was the late Rev. Father John Quinlivan of Montreal, Can. Another son, Joseph Quinlivan, was killed in a railroad accident near Owen Sound some years ago. The children who survive the deceased are: Mrs. Jeanette McCloskey, of this city; Mrs. Mary Bannon, of Stratford, Ont.; Mrs. Annie McInaney, Pelican Rapids; and Donald Quinlivan, of St. Cloud. The deceased was left a widower when the children were all quite young, and his life had been devoted to rearing of his offsprings and also several of his grandchildren, who made their home with him for years.

"He moved from Stratford, Ont. to this county twenty-four years ago and located on a farm in the town of St. Augusta, about six miles from St. Cloud, where he has resided since. He was a highly respected citizen and will be mourned by a large number of friends.

"The funeral services will be held in the church at St. Wendel on Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock and interment will be made in the cemetery there."
