Martha Jane Gideon Melton
Learn about upgrading this memorial...
Birth: 1842
Death: Apr. 22, 1911, USA

According to her MO death certificate (#31733, April 1911) Martha Jane was born in 1842 in Christian County, MO; the daughter of John "Bear Creek Jack" and Mary Polly (Evans) Gideon who are also buried in Seton Cemetery. The census of 1870, however, lists a birth year of 1847.

She first married William David Tittsworth about 1865. The marriage produced five children: Albert G. (b. 1866. m. Alice Bilyeu); Alice Tittsworth (b. 1869 m. James C. Keithley); Elza (b. 1872); Anna Tittsworth (b. 1875); and Thomas J. "Juddie" Tittsworth (b. 1879). The marriage ended in divorce in the early 1880's and Martha Jane re-married widower Thomas Melton about 1885. The second marriage produced one child, George Washington Melton (b. 1888 d. 1906).

The death certificate reports Martha Jane suffered a stroke at her home in Bluff, Missouri on March 30, 1911 which left her paralyzed before she succumbed to its effects three weeks later on April 22. The document lists her place of burial as Antioch. This small community on Bear creek, near Bear Creek and Reno Springs Road, has never had a cemetery. A newspaper article in the Taney County Republican lists her burial in the also unknown Allen Cemetery.

For now we're assuming Martha Jane was placed to rest near her last born son, Geo. W. Melton, about 300 yards to the north of Antioch School at Seaton Cemetery located along what is today Reno Springs Road in Taney County. Legend contends the grave is marked by a pile of stones next to her son, George Melton. The cemetery is also the place where her parents were interred. Her first husband, Wm. D. Tittsworth, provided the information on the death certificate. He and three of the couples children are buried in the Cupp Cemetery about a mile away and subsequent research may indicate a stronger case for Martha's burial there.
