John Matthew Barker (1858-1885) was the grandson of Matthew and Tamar (Davis) Barker, founders of the early settlement on the banks of the Chariton River in South Fork Township, Wayne County, Iowa, known as Barker's Mill. He was the son of Calvin and Nancy Ann (Davis) Barker. John Matthew was married to Mary Alice Putman. John Barker died at age 27, leaving Alice with four-year old John Milton and two-year Charles Benjamin. Matthew and Tamar Barker, along with other of their family are buried in Jones Cemetery in South Fork Township.
