Joseph was born to James Madison Bedford and Elizabeth S. Byars in 1842. Enlisting on September 2, 1862, Joseph joined Company B, "The Sandy Run Yellow Jackets" of the 34th North Carolina Infantry. Joseph's regiment was part of Pender's Brigade, A.P. Hill's Light Division, which in turn was commanded by Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. On September 1, 1862, the Army of Northern Virginia was involved in a major engagement at Ox Hill, also known as Chantilly. Fighting was heavy and amidst a violent thunderstorn Joseph was killed. His final resting spot is unknown at this time.
Joseph's brother Seth B. also joined company B and was himself killed in May, 1864 while fighting in the Wilderness area. His body was never recovered.
