Holmes Guthrie Anderson, Jr. was born on November 3, 1920, in Frost, Texas, to Rev. Holmes Guthrie Anderson and Carrie Lucy Strain. His dad died when he was only three years old. His mother was teaching school in Dallas and needed help taking care of him so and her mother, Allie Thomas Greer Strain of Frost, helped raise him until he was old enough to go to school. He attended Love Elementary School in Dallas. After graduating form high school he enrolled in college. After a year of college, Guthrie enlisted into the US Army on July 14, 1944, in Dallas, and spent most of his enlistment in Ota, Japan. He had always been interested in airplanes and became an airplane mechanic and repairmen while in the service. For recreation, he enjoyed photography. Prior to enlisting into the service, he had gotten married to Celeste Battenfield on October 13, 1941, in The Oak Cliff Christian Church, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. They had two children, daughter Charlotte Ann Anderson and son Holmes Guthrie Anderson, III.
