Gene was born to Gilbert Eugene Austin and Grace E. Austin. Gene married Evelyn Anne Hart January 15,1986 at the Sheriff Office of Morton County Kansas. She survives. He is survived by one brother, Micheal Austin (Janet) of Farmers Branch Texas. He is also survived by three daughters; Pamela Kay Baldwin (Dana) of Elkhart Kansas; Debra Kay Williams of Milliken, Colorado and Barbara Jean of McCallion of Elkhart Kansas. surviving also are seven grandchildren; Tannan Baldwin; Garrett Baldwin; Brandon Williams; Christopher Williams; Micheal McCallion; Cherokee Rankin and Gerico McCallion. Also surviving one step-daughter Tracie L. Robinson of Colton California and many more relatives and host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Charlotte. Grave side services held at 10 a.m Saturday July 25,2015 at the Elmhurst Cemetery Guymon Oklahoma with Rev Rex Petty officiating. Military rites conducted by American Legion Post #80 Liberal Kansas. Robert Brothers Funeral home in Hooker Oklahoma in charge of arrangements.
Gene was the former Seward County Under-sheriff until his retirement in April 2013. Gene spent 44 years in law enforcement starting as a dispatcher in Lamar Colorado where his father was part of the volunteer sheriff's reserve posse.
He later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he worked as a security policeman. He moved to Liberal in 1991 and worked five years on the Liberal Police Dept. before moving to the sheriff's dept.
Gene graduated from Lamar High School in 1965 and he served his country honorably with the National Guard of Colorado. He then enlisted in the Air Force as a dog handler at Lowry AF Base in Colorado. He was a certified law enforcement officer in Colorado,Kansas and Oklahoma. He was an officer in Lamar and Gunnison Colorado and also in Elkhart, Morton County Liberal and Seward County Kansas. He had also worked in Hooker Oklahoma. He always said his greatest accomplishment was graduating from Steward County Community College on May 23,1993 with an Associates of Applied Science in Criminal Justice. After 45 years in Law enforcement Gene retired with much gradatute to all his service.
