Martha Elizabeth Childress was born October 14, 1856 in Benton County, Tennessee to Zachariah Childress and Sarah (Sally) Ann Woods. She would lose her father to the Civil War in 1864, dying as a pow at Andersonville Prison. Martha would meet a young man by the name of John Wiley Barnes and on August 31, 1873, they would be wed. Martha would have at least 10 children; Lou Ada in 1874, William Lee in 1876, Florence in 1879, Claude Hay in 1881, Hugh (Hudie) B. in 1884, John Doss in 1888, Cordie in 1890, Ernest M. in 1891, James Ollie in 1893 and Arthur Edward in 1896. Around 1881, John and Martha would relocate to Howard County, Arkansas. They would live in the Howard/Pike County area the remainder of their lives. Martha would pass away on October 18, 1921, at the age of 65 Years and 4 days. Her husband would follow just about a year later on October 28, 1922. They are both buried in Academy Cemetery located at the Biggs Chapel Methodist Church in Nathan, Pike County, Arkansas.

It should be noted that Martha's Middle name shows an "A" on the 1870 census for Decatur County, Tennessee as well as on the marriage record. The 1900 census for Howard County, Arkansas records her name as Elizabeth. Also, Arthur Edward Barnes' death certificate records a Martha E. Childers (Misspelled)as his mother. With the use of Elizabeth on the 1900 census and the "E." as her middle initial on her son's death certificate, I decided to go with Elizabeth as Martha's middle name.

Also, I applied for Martha's death certificate from the Arkansas Department of Health, however they did not have a record on file. Martha is my great, great grandmother.
