Myrtis Elizabeth Mitchell passed away on May 8, 2015 at the St. Croix Good Samaritan Center.

She was born January 28, 1923 on the family farm north of Milltown. Her parents were Thomas and Elanora Bering Hermansen. Myrtis was baptized July 22, 1923 in the West Denmark Lutheran Church. She attended the Milltown School and graduated in 1942. During WWII she worked as a welder for Walter Butler Shipyards in Superior, Wisconsin. Later she worked in the Mill Inn and the Co-op Store in Milltown.

Myrtis married George Mitchell in 1950. He was in the Navy and at that time stationed in Pensacola, Florida where they lived for three years. During that time their first son, Kenneth was born. Norfolk, Virginia was their next home base for five years. Here is where Douglas was born. Myrtis made it their home wherever they lived. She would find a church within walking distance, and to do the shopping would catch a bus. They lived a couple blocks from Chesapeake Bay where she and the boys spent alot of time on the beach.

When George had orders to go back to the Mediterranean in 1958, Myrtis and the boys moved to a farm on Half Moon Lake. This is where they lived when George put in the last four years of duty at Great Lakes Naval Base. The family joined Milltown Lutheran Church where Myrtis was an active member.
