The Oil City Derrick - Saturday, March 31, 1956
William H. Altman, 97, Knox RD, died in Oil City Hospital Thursday after a short illness. He was born in Beaver Township and spent his entire life in this area. Mr. Altman had been a painter and worked at that trade until he was 95 years old. Northwestern Pennsylvania River Rafter's Association President, H. L. Carson, said, " Billy Altman was the oldest known living river pilot in the association." Mr. Altman, as a youth, piloted rafts on the Clarion River and made the Allegheny River-Pittsburgh run during the early lumbering days of the district. He was an active member of St. Paul's Reformed Church since he was 16. Surviving are two step-children, Raymond Wile, Knox, and Mrs. Grace Knaell, Tulsa, Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law, Mrs. John Altman, Portland, Oregon. The body is in the Stuart Funeral Home in Knox where friends may call. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday. Rev. Marstellar will officiate. Interment will be in St. Paul's Union Cemetery.
