St. Bernard Parish
Although born in New Freeport, PA, Grace and her family moved to Fairmont, WV, before she was of school age, and she grew up in Fairmont, attending high school and college in that town. Although they were actually born quite near each other, Grace first met her future husband, Gordon Duncan, while both attended what is now Fairmont University
As a young unmarried woman Grace was a high school teacher in Farmington, Marion County, WV, but managed to keep up her acquaintance with Gordon, who continued to reside in Cameron, Marshall County, WV, until he joined the Navy in August 1941. She gave up teaching upon their marriage, June 4, 1942, to accompany him to his first duty station. From shortly after their first meeting until after the war, Grace maintained a lively correspondence with Gordon and those letters are still cherished by the family.
After WW II, Grace accompanied Gordon to his various duty stations as he made the Navy his career, while she remained home to raise their children. When Gordon retired in 1962, they both returned to teaching, then moved to Arabi, LA, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Besides teaching English, Biology and Latin, Grace developed her talent as an artist over the years, and not only painted, but joined Gordon in his photographic hobby. She also taught art at the Council on Aging for many years.
She died at age 92, in a New Orleans hospice on January 20, 2003, following a very brief illness.
Long before their deaths, both Gordon and Grace had decided to be cremated and buried beside her parents. After Grace died, Gordon planned to take her cremains to Pennsylvania in the spring, but he died very suddenly on April 7, 2003 at age 94, less than three months after his beloved Grace. In accord with their wishes, they were transported to Pleasant Hill and, on May 14, 2003, were buried beside her parents.
