Auburn - Charles A. O'Leary, 85, of Auburn, died peacefully at home on Sunday, August 26, 2012. Charlie was born in Worcester, a son of the late Dennis A. and Mary Ellen (Laverty) O'Leary. He attended St. Peter's School and later Commerce High School, before graduating from Worcester Boys Trade School, where he studied carpentry. He then joined the US Navy and served proudly during the World War II. Following his return to the Worcester area, Charlie then married his love, Antoinette "Toni" Giabatti on September 13, 1952, and together they would have enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Besides his beloved Toni, Charlie is survived by his four wonderful daughters; Charleen Murphy and her husband Dennis of Auburn, Kathleen O'Leary of West Dennis, Maureen O'Leary of Charlton, and Eileen Luukko and her husband Eric of Sutton; his adoring grandchildren, Michael, Bridgit and Sean Murphy, Ariel and Daniel Nenninger, Ryan, Jason and Margo Ballenas, and Emily and Samuel Luukko; a cherished great grandson, Denis Charles Murphy; his dear siblings, Robert O'Leary and his wife Rita of Worcester, Sr. Mary F. O'Leary, S.P., Chaplain at St. Vincent Hospital, of Worcester, Alfred O'Leary and his wife Mary; his sister-in-law, Cynthia O'Leary of Rochdale; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and his wife Helen, James O'Leary, and by his nephew Michael O'Leary and his two nieces, Susan and Ruth O'Leary.
An accomplished carpenter, Charlie worked for the Local 107 of Carpenters Union for more than 43 years before retiring. Charlie andToni were founding member of North American Martyrs Parish in Auburn, where they have worshiped for 58 years. He was an avid reader, loved music and was a talented singer, enjoyed Italian food and visits to Cape Cod. His great loved of his children, grandchildren and more recently his great grandson allowed Charlie to become quite the "storyteller" to them all, and because of family, made Christmas with the whole family a favorite time for him.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family on Wednesday with the celebration of a funeral Mass at 10 AM in the North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive (off Pakachoag Street), Auburn. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester. There are no visiting hours. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to the Saint Jude's Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) , 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
