AB was one of the handful of survivors of the 1910 Avalanche at Steven's Pass, WA that swept the trains off the mountain tracks and into the valley below. He had just begun what would become a four decade career as a mail carrier for Great Northern Railroad between Seattle and Spokane. AB was sleeping on the train when the avalanche struck and was still an unmarried man at the time.
AB was born on leap year day to German immigrants.
