John Crawford Brockman was born to Walter Leake Brockman Jr. and Adeline Smith Brockman. He was probably named after his father's younger brother, John (1859-1863), who died young from the measles, and his paternal grandmother's maiden name of Crawford (as many in the family were).
In 1900, John was living at the family's home in Des Moines, Iowa and working as a 19 year old inspector in a dry goods store. At age 23, John married Grace Louise Renhold, who was also 23.
The family moved to California and was living in Fresno in 1910, where John was a salesman for a dry goods store. They'd had their son, George W. Brockman, by this time.
By 1915 the family had moved to Visalia, California and John was a shoe repairman in his own shoe shop. He continued on with this occupation through the 1940 census.
John died in 1954 at the age of 73 and Grace died in 1958 at the age of 77. They are buried together. Their only son was:
