Robert A. Autrey, Sr. was born in North Carolina in the late 1700's. The exact location is unknown. His date of birth is speculative. The 1870 US Census, Robert Autrey's pension application submitted in 1871, and a brief obituary places his year of birth at about 1788/9. The 1860 US Census and Robert Autrey's application for bounty land submitted in 1852 places his year of birth at about 1797/8. Our basis for establishing Robert Autrey's year of birth is the information found in the Records of Men Enlisted in the U.S. Army Prior to the Peace Establishment, May 17, 1815 (a ledger in the National Archives). Information found in this ledger indicated that at the time of Robert's enlistment in the Regular Army in June 1812, he was 19 years old. This would mean that Robert A. Autrey, Sr. was born about 1792/3.

The earliest record of Robert Autrey is his enlistment for the War of 1812 on the 26th of June 1812 in the 8th Regiment of Light Infantry commanded by Captain Robert Cunningham and Colonel Patrick Jack. Records indicate that Robert Autery was 5' 7", had hazel eyes, was of fair complexion, and had fair colored hair. Robert's enlistment occurred at Lexington, Edgefield District, South Carolina. The period for this enlistment was eighteen months. Robert Autrey enlisted for a second eighteen month period at Point Peter, Georgia on the 26th of January 1814 in the 8th Regiment of Infantry commanded by Captain Charles Crawford and Colonel Patrick Jack. Robert Autrey was discharged from the Army at Ft. Hawkins, Macon County, Georgia on the 25th of July 1815. Robert's unit was never engaged during the war.

Documents relating to Robert's service during the War of 1812 exist at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. These include applications for a pension for Robert himself, a widow's pension for Elizabeth, and application for Bounty Land.

Little is known of Robert Autrey between July 1815 and 1830 when the U.S. Census was taken in Lowndes County, Alabama. During this period Robert married Maryann __?__ (who was nicknamed Polly), but the time and place are unknown. Robert and Maryann's place of residence before 1830 is also unknown. By 1830, Robert and Maryann had two children, a girl (Mary Jane born about 1819) and a boy (William F. born about 1820). In the 1850 U.S. Census, Mary Jane was listed as having been born in Georgia, but in the 1860 U.S. Census, Mary Jane was listed as having been born in South Carolina. No records for William after the 2nd of May 1841 (marriage record for William Autrey and Polly Watson in Lowndes Co., Alabama) have been found. There is no record of any other children born to Robert and Maryann before 1830.

From land records in Lowndes Co., Alabama, we found that Robert purchased and sold several parcels of land around the present day community of Gordonsville.

On the 10th of March 1835, Robert and Maryann's daughter, Mary Jane married John M. Goodwin and continued to live in Lowndes Co. Four years later on the 17th of March 1839, Maryann gave birth to Urias Delarrey Autrey. This was the last child (one of only three known) of Robert and Maryann. Sometime between the 29th of July 1839, (when Robert and Maryann sold an 80 acre tract of land that they had purchased in 1832) and the time that the U.S. Census was taken in 1840, Maryann died. Maryann's place of burial is unknown although we believe it is the old church cemetery at Gordonsville. The 1840 census showed only two males in Robert Autrey's household (Robert and his son William). The 1840 census also showed that the John M. Goodwin household had an additional boy under five years of age. It appears that Robert's daughter, Mary Jane (Autrey) Goodwin was caring for Urias following Maryann's death.

On the 27th of August 1840, Robert Autrey married Elizabeth Betsy Till in Lowndes Co. Together, they had eight children: Robert A. Autrey, Jr. - b. ca. 1842, Jane (Janie) Autrey - b. January 1844, Benjamin F. Autrey - b. ca. 1845, George Autrey - b. ca. 1846, Florence Autrey - b. October 1847, Martha Ann Autrey - b. April 1854, Thomas Autrey - b. ca. 1855, and Jack W. Autrey - b. June 1859. Little is known about the Robert Autrey family during the decade of the 1840's. William F. Autrey was married to Polly Watson in 1841. A son, George Autrey died in 1849 according to the 1850 mortality schedule. Another son, Thomas Autrey died in 1859 according to the 1860 mortality schedule.

On 18 November 1853, Robert Autrey contracted with Samuel Gordon of Gordonsville to purchase a total of 160 acres of land in southwestern Lowndes County near the community of Macedonia (Macedonia no longer exists). This property, which was known as the Autrey homeplace, was the subject of a Chancery Court case in the 1860's. It took until 1883, when Urias Autrey as administrator of Robert and Elizabeth Autrey's estate finally got the proper title established.

Robert died on 5 December 1876 and was buried at Gilgal Cemetery in Lowndes Co., AL. His second wife, Elizabeth died sometime after the 1880 census was taken and the fall of 1883 when Robert and Elizabeth's estate settlement was executed. It is probable that Elizabeth was also buried at Gilgal Cemetery.

According to my grandmother's sister, Mrs. James Benson Sellers, her grandfather, Robert A. Autrey, was buried in Gilgal Cemetery and not in the old Macedonia Cemetery where Robert's son, Urias, is buried.
