David Lloyd Bernstein was the son of Gad Bernstein and Hannah (nee Rosenberg) Koler. He was separated from his brother Charles and sister Dolly at an early age, and went to live with his father after their parents divorced. His father was remarried to Florence Bookman, and they had a daughter, Ellen, whereupon David gained another sister. He had an interest in writing, and his brother Charles encouraged him to attend the experimental and bohemian Black Mountain College, but instead, he decided to study law at the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to grad school at Yale University.
He married my mother, Dorothy Wirth, at her parent's townhouse in Boston in 1952, and they had a daughter, Elisa, in New Haven, Connecticut. They moved to Greenwich Village, NY in 1956 where they had 3 more daughters, Alexandra, Gabrielle, and Eve.
David was a lawyer for the Labor Relations Board in Washington, DC for 17 years, after which he retired to travel and manage his father, Gad's estate.
His first marriage ended in 1964, after which he married Harriett (Tyson) Voegli, who had two children from a previous marriage, Anne and Mark. Several years after that marriage ended, he married Deborah Brudno, (deceased) and they bought a home in DuPont Circle and renovated it, were active theatergoers and enthusiastic "foodies", travelled, and generally enjoyed life until he developed Parkinson's disease, which he finally succumbed to after a long struggle in 2011.
He was an aficionado of the theater, fine dining and film, and had an uncanny ability to find a great parking space in terrible traffic at the last minute.
He was fond of chocolate, Australian culture, and the Cuban traditional dish ropa veja, or "old clothes". In one of our last conversations, I asked him if he'd seen any good movies lately, and he replied, "Death to Smoochy".
David was a cultured, decent and gentle man and will be greatly missed by many.
