Son of Samuel and Verona Black. He had four sisters. He was a lifelong resident of Holden, MA. He was a farmer and he enlisted when he was 18.

His service record: Enlistment date: 7 Dec 1863 in Worcester, MA., as a Private.

Enlisted in Company B, 57th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 4 Jan 1864.

Died of disease Company B, 57th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 22 Feb 1865 in Alexandria, VA.

Height: 5 ft. 9 in., light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair.

Buried in Alexandria National Cemetery, the government also placed a headstone for Henry in his hometown of Holden, MA., in Grove Cemetery (FIND A GRAVE #96429423). His name also appears on the bottom of Sacrifice. Panel 3 of the CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL TABLETS that are located in the Holden Town Hall along with 29 others soldiers that never came home from the war.
