Walter became a successful grocery merchant and managed his own store, "Bennett's Grocery", on Crockett's west side.
As a widower, Walter lived with his daughter Evy and her husband in Crockett after his beloved Jane died in 1946.
He died in 1950 at the age of 74 years and six months and is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery next to his beloved Jane.
