From Civil War Military Records: Alexander Ashby, age 26 of Toolesboro, Iowa - nativity Indiana, enlisted Sept. 11, 1861 into Co K 8th Iowa Infantry.

Alexander reported missing in action and taken prisoner Apr. 6, 1862 at Battle of Shiloh, TN.

Discharged Aug. 5, 1862 Benton Barracks, MO for disability.

His early death can probably be attributed to disease acquired while a prisoner of war.

Alexander was son of Hankerson Ashby & his 2nd wife Peggy FRAMMEL Ashby. Hankerson was son of Bladen Ashby #14815840 & Catherine VAN METER Ashby #28742694.

Bladen Ashby age 33 (1st Cousin of Alexander) same city of residence and nativity, enlisted same day into same company as Alexander. Bladen was discharged for disability Mar 13, 1862 St. Louis, MO, less than a month before the Battle of Shiloh. He is buried in Union Cemetery Union Co., Oregon. FAG #42142184. Bladen was the son of Abraham Ashby, brother of Hankerson Ashby.
