Robert Gordon Campbell, of Costa Mesa, passed away in his sleep at his home on August 5, 2011, at the age of eighty-nine.
Robert was born October 13, 1921 in Bovey, Minnesota, the son of Eugene and Zena Brawn (Brown) Campbell.
Robert spent his youth in Mint Canyon, off of the Sierra Highway, California, on a 160 acre land grant homesteaded by his father, Eugene, awarded for Eugene's military service in the Spanish American War. Robert bears the name of the original American progenitor, his great-grandfather (6), Robert Campbell, who came to America from Tyrone, Ulster County, Ireland in 1719, settling in New London, Connecticut. This Argyll Campbell line hails originally from the West Highlands of Scotland.
Robert's grandfather, Albert Campbell, was born in Voluntown, Connecticut on October 5, 1836. Albert served his country as a Union Captain in the Civil War, after which he located to Adrian, Minnesota.
Albert was an educator and became the Superintendent of Schools in Adrian. Albert donated a large tract of land to Adrian which to this day bears his name.
Robert, continuing with the family tradition of military service, served his country with the Air Force in World War II flying B29 bombers.
After the war, Robert married Loraine Ida Whitcomb from Woodstock, Vermont, on January 10, 1947.
Loraine, a Women's Army Corps veteran, saw wide service in World War II. Loraine sailed to England on the Queen Mary after it had been converted to a troop ship which was constantly hunted by German U boats on the voyage. During Loraine's military service in London, Loraine experienced and survived the Blitz, the V1 and V2 bombing raids. Loraine Campbell passed on August 4, 2008.
Robert graduated from Woodbury College; (University) after the war and was a Vice President at Merrill Lynch, Laguna Hills for many years until his retirement in 1987.
Robert and Loraine, always the devoted life partners, remarkably passed away three years apart, within hours of each other. Dad will be forever remembered by our family for his great generosity, strength, and wise counsel. Our family's patriarch will be missed.
Robert Campbell is survived by his sons Gary Dale Campbell of Malibu, Mark Scott Campbell of Los Angeles, granddaughter Elizabeth Pierce Campbell of Los Angeles and daughter-in-law, Pamela Pierce Campbell of Malibu.
