Joseph Martin "Joe Mart" Abbott was born on July 27, 1868 in Scott Co., Tennessee. He was the son of Thomas Abbott (1828-aft 1880) and Mary "Polly" Campbell (abt 1833-aft 1880), the seventh of their nine known children.

Little is know about Joseph's parents. It is thought that they were born near the KY-TN state line in an area of Whitley Co., KY that is now part of McCreary Co., KY. They are also thought to have died in this area but their burial sites are unknown.

Joseph, usually called "Joe" or "Joe Mart", married Martha Acres (1870-1850) on Nov. 2, 1888 in Scott Co., TN. She was the daughter of Louis Jasper Acres (1847-1916) and Emeline Elizabeth Hughette (1850-1938), both born in the Scott County area of Tennessee. They are buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Scott Co., TN.

Joseph and Martha were married for 43 years and had ten known children. They were Henry Abbott (1889-1965), Lewis Calvin Abbott (1892-1975), Floyd Abbott (1895-1966), Mary Abbott (1897- ?), Bertha Abbott (1901- ?), Eva Abbott (1903- ?), Ada Abbott (1905- ?), Delpha Abbott (1908- ?), Hilery Abbott (1911-1918) and Clifford Abbott (1914-1980).

In 1912 Joe and William Whitmill Stephens (1869-1956) moved their families from Scott Co., Tennessee to Parksville, Boyle Co., Kentucky. Joe eventually settled on Chestnut Grove Road while William settled on Maple Grove Road (later known as Tennessee Ridge Road).

It is said that their families lived in an barn, divided for privacy and for stock, while they built homes for their families. They may have built the barn before they brought their families to Boyle County. Most likely, they made the trip by train to Junction City, paying to haul their families and their belonging in empty freight cars. Thomas Letcher "Tom" King, a cousin and friend of both Joe and William, followed them to Parksville in 1916 and at first, lived on William's property in any old dirt floor log cabin. He and his family also made the trip by freight train and settled on Tennessee Ridge in Parksville.

Joe died on Oct. 5, 1931 in Parksville at the age of 63. He is buried in the Parksville Cemetery. His son, Floyd, was the informant for Joe's death certificate.

Joseph's wife, Martha, died on July 14, 1950 in Parksville at the age of 79. She too, is buried in the Parksville Cemetery, next to her husband, Joseph.
