John Anderson, 96, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Monsignor Roger Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a Third Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 4 p.m., the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.

John was born Jan. 28, 1911, in Webster City, Iowa, the son of Fred and Emma (Renz) Anderson. He lived in Ulmer, Iowa, and graduated from Auburn High School. He came to Sioux City in 1933.

On April 23, 1933, he married Margaret A. Wagner in Varina, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the Philippines. He was a barber in Sioux City for more than 55 years. He owned and operated Anderson Barber Shop for many years, retiring in 1980. Margaret died Nov. 13, 1994, in Sioux City.

He was more than a 50-year member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a past president of the Men's Club at the church. He served as the president of the Heelan High School Parent's Club. He was a member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus Epiphany Council 743 and served as the Grand Knight of that council.

He was a member of the Barber's Local 52 and served as president of that organization. He also served as the secretary for State Barber's Union. He was an avid coin collector and was a past president of the Siouxland Coin Club. He received the Chamber of Commerce Secret Six Award. He belonged to the Eagle's and the Sioux City Lions Club. He was a member of the American Legion Monahan Post 64.

He was best known for being a loving and caring husband to Margaret for more than 60 years and the most important parts of his life were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Kathleen and Bill Linden of Garfield, Ark., Jeaneen and Ray Nacke of Sioux City, Dr. John of Laguna Woods, Calif., Rose Marie and Tom Bennett of Poulsbo, Wash., James and Helen of Sioux City, David and Ann of Lake Bluff, Ill., Michael of Lincoln, Neb., and Mark and Deanna of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Julie Tipler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Rose; and four brothers, Paul, Edward, Eugene and Harold.

Pallbearers will be Chet Anderson, Matt Anderson, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Bennett, Gary Bogenrief and Beth Duffy.

A memorial has been established in his name for Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Carmelite Monastery.
