Heinrich T. Dirks was born in 1837 in Karolswalde, Russia (present day Ukraine) to Tobias and Helena (Unruh) Dirks. He was one of 9 children.

He was first married to Lena Thomas about 1861 and had 4 children. Lena died about 1873 and is buried at Karolswalde, Russia.

Heinrich married Katherine Nickel about 1874 and they had 8 children after their arrival in America. They arrived January 9, 1875 in America aboard the SS Kenilworth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where their first child Benjamin H. Dirks was born on April 9, 1875 in the new Country. The family settled at Marion, South Dakota shortly thereafter and raised their family.
Two of Heinrich T. Dirks nephews Benjamin Dirks and Heinrich Dirks also settled at Marion Junction, SD. Records indicate that Heinrich may have had up to 12 children. Three of Heinrich and Katherine Dirk's children
John Henry Dirks, Benjamin H. Dirks, and Cornelius Dirks
settled in the same area and raised their families.
