Beverly Dawn Shomette McDevitt was my mother. She grew up a only child. When she was seventeen her parents divorced. Sometimes I don't think I ever really knew her. I was not the daughter she wanted. I always fought with my weight and that embarrased her. I never heard the words I love you from her. She loved her animals. She always said she didn't like people. When I was younger she worked as a switchboard operator in Washington, D.C. When we moved to Winchester, Virginia she got a job at Capitol Records. After the plant closed down she worked diferent jobs. My mother was a smoker and developed COPD. She moved to Florida to breathe easier. I think the move allowed her to live a few more years. Even though she could be on the cold side I still called her frequently and sent her funny little cards. Maybe she loved me in her own way. To this day I don't know. She wasn't the type of mother who went to the PTA or school bake sales. She didn't read bedtime stories, or seem to take any interest in my school activities, tell me about men, or just bake cookies. I was never allowed friends in the house. I never even had a birthday party. When I married for the first time my mother never showed up. This hurt me deeply and I never knew why. She wasn't abusive as far as hitting me. But her words were. She clothed, fed, and gave me shelter, made sure I was clean and had clean clothes. But I needed more. She passed away from COPD at the age of 68 yrs. old in Sept. 2004. A special Thank You to Princess Belle for sponsoring my Mother's memorial.
