Jacob Bales was the son of Curtis and Hannah (Evans) Bales. He married Rebecca Thornburg the 24th of 1st mo 1827 at Cherry Grove Friends Meeting. Over the next fifteen years they were members at several Friends Meetings: Cherry Grove, Springfield, and White River. In 1844 he and his wife were disowned for "joining the separatists", likely the Anti-Slavery Friends. He and his wife were the parents of six children.
