Born in Georgia. The family moved to Alabama between 1840 and 1850. Married to Lucy Frances Crow on 17 Dec 1851 in Macon, AL. Lucy died 19 Jun 1863. He married Sarah "Sallie" Jackson on 3 April 1865.

Children with Lucy include Jennette Heneritta "Nettie", James M., Thomas E., Benjamin, and Susan.

Children with Sallie include Mattie, Virginia Hixie, Laurenda V., John Payton, Mary Elizabeth, and Sarah Frances "Fannie."

He is listed in the Tallapoosa County, AL military records on the roster of the 8th Confederate Cavalry (Wade's) The muster roll for the 8th Confederate Cavalry identifies him as the company bugler. The 8th Conf. Cav. was organized in May 1862 and reorganized in August 1862.
