Gilbert McKinley Brines was a bus driver and veteran of World War I. Born Jan 16, 1895 in Wabash County, IL to James Russell Brines 1871-1949, a teacher and farmer and Flora Viola Groff Brines 1872-1934 he joined the U.S. Navy Apr 12 1917. He was a carpenter on a submarine who's mission was to escort troop carriers to Europe from North America during WWI. He married Oma May Stoltz Oct 12, 1917 in Wabash County, IL. Together they had three children; Lois Marie, Oma Jean and Rhea May. His wife died in child birth with Rhea in 1926. He later married Bessie Bertine Leipold. He drove a bus for Detroit Street Railway. Later developed Coerces of the lungs from breathing dirty air with the windows down, according to his nephew. He died 14 Apr 1982 in Mt. Carmel, IL and is buried in Rosehill Cemetery in Mt. Carmel.
