Richard was born in North Bend, Oregon, the second child of Norm and Dot (Rinehart) Luke. He spent his childhood fishing and hunting with his family, playing a little football and doing a little boxing, tinkering with cars and woodworking.
As a young man, he went to work in the timber industry; logging and mill work. He was married briefly to Janice Olson in 1954, and to this union were born a daughter and a son.
He married Wilma McGowne in 1957 and they had four children, two sons and two daughters. In the early 1960's, Richard went back to school and gained skills in surveying and engineering. He was employed by the City of North Bend then Central Lincoln PUD, in Reedsport, until his passing.
Richard and Wilma moved to Reedsport, Oregon in 1969, and there they raised their family. Along the way, he built a few houses, learned to play the guitar, wrote some poetry, drew some cartoons, attended baseball, basketball and football games, choir concerts and school plays. He was a proud father, a knowledgeable engineer, and a talented craftsman.
Richard was a member of the Masonic, Eagles and Elks lodges. His death, at 57, was due to lung disease. He is loved and missed by many. He was preceded by his son, Lt. Matthew Mark Luke, USAF and his father.
