George A. Golden was the son of Philip Golden and Cynthia Ann Sherman. Philip came to Texas from Pennsylvania and settled in Bastrop County, and later Travis County where George was born. Cynthia Ann had been previously married to a man named Rodney Baker who was killed by the Comanches in his own yard, leaving her alone to care for several children. Noah Smithwick performed the wedding ceremony for Philip and Cynthia Ann. In his book "The Evolution of a State or Recollections of old Texas Days", he described the ceremony as his second official act as Justice of the Peace of Bastrop County.
