Clyde Leroy McGiffin was born on January 9, 1898 to John and Stella (Roberts) McGiffin, the fifth of six children, in Toledo, Ohio. During World War I, Clyde joined the U. S. Navy as a seaman on April 3, 1917. He was assigned for a short time to the battleship Vermont and then to the gunboat Dubuque, spending most of his service in Panama and the Caribbean.

Returning home in 1919, Clyde met and married Getrude Irene Spahr in Detroit, Michigan, on August 31, 1921. They settled in Oregon, Ohio, where their only child, Carl Eugene, was born on August 30, 1922.

That same year Clyde joined the Toledo Fire Department, initially working out of Station No. 6 on Starr Avenue. Later on he was transferred to Station No. 10, where he remained until his retirement in 1957. During his thirty-five years with the Department he had earned the rank of captain and was one of the founders of the Fireman's Credit Union.

Clyde spent the remainder of his life with Gertrude at their home on Idaho Street. He died at St. Charles Hospital on August 18, 1985. Gertrude lived another fifteen years, dying in 2001.
