Robert Warren Glass, a World War II veteran, was a well-rounded person after leaving the Navy.
"He was a sportsman, hunter, fisherman, golfer and brought home trophies too," said his wife, Kathleen Glass. "He also loved to dance, and we did that often."
But his asthma problems forced him to settle down to a more relaxed pace, she said. He enjoyed to working in the yard and taking short walks.
"When he retired, we did the simple things, like being in our home with family and friends in Columbia," Mrs. Glass said.
Mr. Glass died Sunday, April 18, 1999. He was 77.
He had seen much of the globe during World War II. Mr. Glass served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-45 and was stationed on the USS Philadelphia and USS Pittsburgh. He also was a part of five major campaigns in the Pacific and Atlantic.
When the ship was in port, Mrs. Glass got to be with him, but those occasions were far too rare.
Mr. Glass married Kathleen Seymour on December 15, 1941.
"I was 18 and he was 20 when we got married," Glass said. "I feel like I was married all my life. But I still like everything about him."
Mr. Glass was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Wyaconda, to Clarence C. and Ethel Borngrouer Glass. He studied in Burlington, Iowa. Mr. Glass moved to Boone County in 1936 and to Columbia in 1947, where he owned and operated Superior Self Service Laundry for nearly 20 years. Then, from 1969 to 1977, he worked in the masonry business.
His retirement gave him more time for his family.
Services, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Forsberg, will be at 11:00 a.m. today at the Sturgeon United Methodist Church. He will also receive a military graveside service at Mount Horeb Cemetery, Sturgeon. Visitation was Tuesday.
Mr. Glass is survived by his wife, Kathleen Glass; a daughter, Glenda Kaye Sapp of Columbia; a brother, Charles Glass of Springfield; two sisters, Rose McClure of Columbia and Marge Tipps of Spring, Texas; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Two brothers and a sister died earlier.
