SAMUEL SERENUS BENEDICT
Rev Samuel Serenus Benedict was born near the celebrated Chautauqua grounds in New York November 27 1832 He came to Wisconsin in 1839 graduated from the State University in 1856 and received the degree of Master of Arts from the same institution in 1859 He enlisted in the 49th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry with the rank of First Lieutenant in Co A In consequence of disease there contracted and which no doubt was the cause of his death he was discharged in the spring of 1865.
For thirteen years Brother Benedict was engaged in teaching For a time he had charge of Bronson Institute located at Point Bluff besides being instructor in several other institutions of learning He studied law but just as he was ready to be admitted to the bar he felt his call to the ministry Obedient to that call he joined the West Wisconsin Conference and for thirty eight years with scarcely an interim has answered to the call of his name at its annual sessions His first pastorate was Albany Wis afterwards Mauston North La Crosse Menomonie Montford Hazel Green Black Earth Galesville Richland Center Brodhead New Richmond Reedsburg New Lisbon Poynette Marshfield Knapp Sechlerville Arcadia and Pepin For eleven years Brother Benedict was Secretary of the West Wisconsin Conference In 1892 he represented his conference at the General Conference in Omaha Neb and was chosen one of the secretaries of that great body He served on the joint board of trustees of Lawrence University Appleton Wis for twelve years and during that time was one of standing committee on Faculty and Degree The change in the time of the meeting of the first session of the General Conference from the first day of May to the first Wednesday of May originated with our brother In 1900 in consequence of failing health he took a superannuated relation and settled in Portage City Last autumn he made application to the government and was appointed to a position in the Pension Department in Milwaukee The work was too arduous for his enfeebled condition and in the month of May last he returned to Portage Although suffering intensely he was constantly planning for the future About three weeks before his death he was taken to his bed and soon it was evident that the foe of all things mortal would soon terminate his earthly career At times his sufferings were indescribable but on the fourteenth day of July 1903 they were ended and the soul of Samuel Serenus Benedict joined that triumphant throng where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest Brother Benedict was first married at Madison Wisconsin January 1st 1857 to Miss Mary A Parkhurst From this first marriage two children were born CB Benedict of Minneapolis Minn and Mrs Irving Mason of Aberdeen Wash He was married the second time to Miss Debbie Brayton of Poynette Wisconsin May 17th 1870 This marriage was blest with two children Rev DS Benedict of St Ignace Michigan and Mrs John W Raymer of Salt Lake City Utah In the death of our brother the Conference has lost a faithful and devoted member In the archives of the Conference there remains the name of him of whom it may be said he kept himself unspotted from the world As a scholar gentleman minister and christian he was loved and respected by all classes and denominations The funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Portage on Thursday July 16 at high noon The writer who was an old friend and comrade in arms conducted the services assisted by the pastor Rev W 0 Nuzum and Rev FH Harvey Rev TE Foss Rev JW Barnett and Rev JG Blue pastor of the Presbyterian Church The pall bearers were Rev TE Foss Rev JW Barnett Rev JJ Ehrstein Rev AG Harrison of the Episcopal Church and Rev WH Stone of the Baptist Church After the services at the church the remains were conveyed to the Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul depot thence to Mauston where the Rev LA Brenner officiating the interment was made Sister Benedict who has been his constant companion since 1870 remains to mourn his loss While the loving hands of her children shall help to smooth for her the pathway of life she shall have the prayers and sympathies of the brethren of the West Wisconsin Conference Sleep my brother peacefully sleep until the resurrection morn when thou shalt join that throng triumphant which in the presence of the Lord shall be found without spot and blameless.
