From 1817, just before his marriage, until 1828, Hervey bought and sold several parcels of land in Southport. During those years he was a resident of Southport, then still part of Elmira. For a short time in 1829-30 he owned property in Elmira, on the road to Big Flats. About 1830 Hervey and Emily moved to the town of Wells, Bradford County, PA, and soon after to Gillett, a village in the adjoining town of South Creek, PA. In Gillett he was a tavern keeper, proprietor of one of the three hotels located in South Creek township, on the stagecoach line from Williamsport, PA, to Elmira, NY.
In 1839, after 8 or 9 years in Gillett (and possibly Southport), "Harvey (sic) Jones Innkeeper" was added to the Assessment list of Towanda, PA, farther south in Bradford County. Their youngest child was born in Towanda, but they returned to Elmira only a few years later, about 1843.
The 1850 census shows Hervey, 56 in Elmira, a carpenter, with wife Emily, 50, and children Emily age 19, Francis, 18, Edward, 13, and H. Elliot, 11. His eldest son Austin, 26 Jones was there too, with wife Hulda, 18 and baby daughter Frances, 6 months. The two elder daughters Abigail and Hannah were already married and living in PA. Son Lewis was living with his sister Hannah. Josiah had died. William was probably living on his own somewhere.
About 1852 Hervey and Emily left Elmira and moved to Marion, Linn County, Iowa, with their three younger sons. Daughter Emily married in 1852 and stayed in Elmira. When the mother, Emily (White) Jones died only four years after they had moved to Marion, Hervey lived there with his son Charles Lewis for a few more years. In 1860 he was an heir of his brother Simeon R., and was still "of Linn County, Iowa," but sometime between 1860 and 1864, he again returned to Elmira. He was said to be living with one of his daughters when he died in August 1864, age 70, of typhoid fever. One source specifies that he died in South Creek, PA, which suggests he may then have been living with his daughter Abigail Moore.
By the time Hervey died, six of his seven sons had gone to Iowa (the only one who did not go had died in Elmira as a young man). Austin, # 61457909 (Find A Grave #'s); William, # 61457973; Francis, # 75971468; and Charles, #76019403 died in Iowa; Edward # 30984881 moved on to Kansas; Hervey jr. returned to Elmira after the Civil War. Several of them served in the Civil War. Hervey's three daughters had all married in New York or Pennsylvania and remained there all of their lives.
