Edith May Russell, the second child of Mrs. Sadie & Charley Russell was born on the Richardson place (as it was known) 3 Miles N.E. of Altoona, Ks. One mile west of where she died. The conditions surrounding this death were very sad. The Mother, being confined to her bed from the recent birth of Harold, was very nervous and she asked her brother-in-law and wife Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Russell to take the two children Laverna and Dorothy, and care for them. It was almost immediately learned that both children were suffering from that dreaded disease Diphtheria. In the case of Edith, membranous croup developed. The father was called as soon as it was noticed that the the children were not as well as usual. They summonsed a physician at once. He quarantined the home immediately.
Edith was a very bright child for as young as she was, she seemed to realize her condition. Shortly before her death her father left the room for a few minutes, and she noticed his absence and asked her aunt "Bessie" Russell where he was. At the same time she said, "He ought not leave you alone with me." and about one hour before her death, she said to her father, "I will choke to death." Her death came as a great shock to the many friends and family, who could only extend their hands and their hearts to cry out in mercy. Some neighbors went to the home but did not enter.
She leaves to morn her loss, her father, mother two sisters, Laverna Lucinda, and Dorothy Lou, and infant brother Harold, and many friends.
The funeral services were held at the home of the parents and were very sad indeed. The mothers bed was placed by the window, the little casket beneath the window on the outside. With the father and those who assisted him at a distance. Every precaution possible was taken.
Rev. A.A. Mason presented some very beautiful thoughts from the subject, "Gathered Lillie's," and the little body was laid to rest in the Altoona cemetery.
