BEDFORD - Charles H. baker, 86, of 558 S. Leatherwood Road, Bedford, died at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Monday, December 27, 2004.
Born November 4, 1918, in Jackson County, he was the son of Nellie Glover and Marshall Baker. He married Mary A. Bair on July 6, 1941.
He was retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane; and he was a veteran of World War II, serving as a pilot with the U.S. Armed Forces, including 31 months overseas.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Bedford, where he had served as an elder and a member of the United Workers' Sunday School Class; and he was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F. & A.M.
During his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, discussing current events and woodworking.
Surviving with his wife, Mary Baker of Bedford are one son, Charles Keith Baker of Bedford; one daughter, Linda Lee (Baker) Smith of Bedford; one sister, Genevieve Cowles of Vallonia; five grandchildren, Bryan K. Smith, Lori D. (Smith) Day, Stacy D. (Baker) Gilmore, Erika M. (Baker) McKinney and Jordan K. Baker; eight great-grandchildren, Hannah, Evan, Riley, Bailee, Dravan, Kinley, Payton and Luke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with the Rev. Robert Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in Erie Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on today, and from 1 p.m. until the hour of service on Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary of Bedford. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33, American Legion.
