George was a Railroad Brakeman for Southern Railway. On January 21, 1923, he was riding a train pulled by Locomotive No. 4758 traveling to Monroe, Amherst Co., Virginia. That day the Engineer was S. H. Harrington and the Fireman was J. T. Curtin. As the train approached Inlet, Virginia, the locomotive boiler exploded due to a failure in the firebox, and the subsequent crash killed the Engineer and George Walter Allensworth.
