Velma Viola Teter, 91, was called home to be with her Savior on Thursday, June 2, 2011. She passed away at Plaza West Regional Health Center in Topeka, KS. Velma was born on February 21, 1920 in Dewey, Oklahoma, the daughter of Andrew Edward and Alta Opal (Jackson) Medford.
She had nine siblings of which seven preceded her in death. She lived in northeast Oklahoma until she was about 10 yr old when the family moved to Coffeyville, KS. She lived there until she was married, graduating from Field-Kinley high school in 1938 . After marriage, she moved to St Joe, MO. to be with her husband. They moved to the Topeka area, after his discharge from the military, eventually settling in Wakarusa, where she made her home for the next 50 years. The past 7 years she had lived at Plaza West.
Velma has worked some over her lifetime; as a shirt presser at a laundry, the church nursery, taking in ironing, some babysitting but most of her lifetime has been spent as a homemaker and a mother. Velma was known for her good home cooking, kept everyone in awe with her story telling, enjoyed fishing, active in her church, and at one time made little teddy bears for children in the hospital.
She married John William Teter, Sr. on May 13, 1943 in Coffeyville, KS. He preceded her in death in 1983. They enjoyed 39 years together. Four children were born to this union. Surviving children are; Patricia Ella (Richard) Richardson, Bend, OR., Peggy Ann (Ray) Beasterfeld, Eskridge, KS., John William Jr (Barbara) Teter, Fairborn, OH. She was preceded in death by the youngest child, Paula Anita, in 2003. Velma had 8 grandchildren; Elaine Houseknecht, Watkins Glen, NY, Sherri Routt, Gainesville, VA, Jennifer Hebert, Chesapeake, VA, Michael Teter, Honolulu, HI, Judy Messerschmidt, Ottawa, KS, Joyce Beasterfeld, Emporia, KS., and Nick Beasterfeld, Eskridge, KS.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Neal Beasterfeld, in 2005. She had 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is also survived by 2 sisters; Barbara Tipton, Topeka, KS and Shirley Miller, Joplin, MO. Velma was loved and will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at First Church of the Nazarene, 1001 Buchanan St, Topeka, KS. The public is invited, there will be no viewing. A private family interment will be held later this week. Burial will be at Shawnee Center Cemetery, Wakarusa, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of the Nazarene. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
