Captain Russell E. Forester, USNR, a gentleman with a warm smile and firm handshake, a WWII hero, a man with a love for family, country, friends, traveling, fishing, Louis L'Amour and The Longhorns, passed away May 8 after living a full, hearty, active life for 95 years.

Russell, born October 7, 1911, is the last surviving child of Annie Marie and Richard E. Forester. In college, 1931-1934, he was captain of the SWT Track Team and a 125 pound starting guard for the Bobcat football squad. His advanced education was completed with a Master's Degree from UT. He married cute little red headed, freckled faced Hazel Brackston Batey three days after Pearl Harbor. He then served time in the US Navy where he retired as Captain. Russell also retired as Captain of the Austin Police Department. He was a Third Degree Mason, member of Hill City Lodge 456 AF&AM, a member of the Provost Guard of the Ben Hur Shrine Temple, along with being a proud member of other organizations including the Austin Rifle Club, The "T" Association, and The Longhorn Club.

He was the proud father of Suzanne and Janie, and considered their husbands Larry Stein and Jerry Hunt as his sons. He always said he had four really great grandchildren, Russell Paige and Travis Forester Stein, Betsy Jane and Brackston Clay Hunt. The number increased to five with the addition of Travis' wife, Megan. He considered Delores Mayberry a daughter as well. The family also includes many loving nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759.

Even with Russell's military and police background, he was a sentimental man and he will be missed by many...especially his "three lovely girls".

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2007 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Private burial services will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. [Obtained 10 May 2007 from wcfish.com.]
