Below is the information from a newspaper clipping which had been kept by Virginia Lee "Aggie" WOODALL, née LACKEY, youngest child of James and Carrie (née LEE) LACKEY. This article was published in THE OKLAHOMA NEWS on Sunday, May 30, 1937 in Section A, page 5, column 3.

Per Aggie, her mother was tending to her rose bushes when a thorn prick her hand which resulted in a bacterial infection that caused Carrie's death [The PUBLIC RECORDS column in the June 2, 1937 DAILY OKLAHOMAN newspaper stated, on page 17 column 2, her cause of death as follows: "Carrie Lackey, 59 years old, 2700 South Eastern avenue, septicemia."]

Her death was prior to the development and availability of a variety of antibiotics to fight infections. Penicillin was the first antibiotic developed for mass production but it was not widely accessible to the general public until the mid to later 1940s.
