Mr. John S. Bassett, age 91, of Lakeland, FL passed away Monday, August 15, 2011.
He was born March 15, 1920 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of Shell and Cora (Buchanan) Bassett.
John Bassett, a petroleum engineer who retired from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in 1987, died August 15 at Lakeland Regional Medical Cneter in Lakeland, Florida.
He died of a subdural hematoma suffered in a fall at his home in Lakeland, Fl. on July 16, according to his daughter Pamela Plaistad.
Mr. Bassett moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1963 and joined what was then the Federal Power Commission. His work involved administration of legislation affecting the natural gas industry; in this capacity he testified before congressional committees.
He was a former president of the Washington chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. In 1984 he received an outstanding job performance award.
John Sheldon Bassett was a native of Tulsa and and a 1942 graduate of the University of Oklahoma. During World War II he served in the Army in Europe and participated in the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp and satellite concentration camps. He retired from the Army Reserve as a captain in 1953.
He lived in Alexandria, VA, and later Bowie, MD before moving to Florida in 1989.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mabel Simmons Bassett of Lakeland, Fl; two daughters, Pamela Plaistad of Gaithersburg MD and Michelle Sprosty of Sacramento, CA; and two granddaughters.
