Mr. Dan McFarlane, Saturday, Oct. 20, 1894, Age: 79 Years
Scarcely six days pass and death again enters the McFarlane residence and takes Mr. Dan McFarlane, Sr., Saturday, Oct. 20th, 1894, at 11 p.m., aged 79 years.
Mr. McFarlane was a native of Scotland, being born to that country in 1815, came to America in 1844 and has resided in this locality ever since. Mr. McFarlane was one of Elk Grove's oldest citizens, and was a man well posted on most any topic. He was respected by everybody, not having an enemy on earth. He was a loving husband, a kind, indulgent father and a good neighbor. There was a large concourse of relatives and friends followed the remains to the cemetery, being one of the largest funerals ever held in Elk Grove, where he was laid to rest. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. P.S. Mather.
The wife of Mr. McFarlane was buried last week, there being only six days between their death. It was a very sad affair. The four sons, Daniel, John, Charles and George, who are left to mourn their loss, have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
The pall-bearers were: Messers. John Stephens, Gabriel Gill, John Grotkin, Sr., Wm. Mitchell, Wm. White and Jas. Lindsay.
The following letter was written by deceased a year previous to his death, which he gave to Mr. Wm. Mitchell, requesting him to read it at his funeral:
"Our friend and brother did not except the views and beliefs entertained by many of our people, but he was a firm believer in the greatness and goodness of a just and infinite God, who is ruler of the universe. As he saw and understood His character and teachings he trusted in Him. It is not for you and me to say that he should have discarded his belief and accepted ours. He, like all of us, must finally meet the judge of all the earth, and when that time comes we will not be tried by any creed of any church, but will meet face to face a just and merciful God, who will not condemn without reason. Shall not the judge of all the earth do right? In the hands of that Judge we leave our departed friend and brother."
