Mary Amanda "Mandy" Vaughan was born May 7, 1876 in Clifty, Madison, Arkansas. Her parents were Allen Woods Vaughan (1845–1916) and Mary Evaline Wisdom (1845–1916). In 1899 she married James Jehu Barnes (1871-1945).
Mandy was slender, gracious, very ladylike, refined and dignified. She loved her home and family, and was kind to everyone. She treasured momentos of her family members and ancestors, and she brightened up the atmosphere wherever she was.
She loved to cook and to collect recipes. Mandy cherished each item handed down through the family and, on her own, acquired lovely dishes and furniture. These continued to be appreciated by family members.
It can be said that as the family moved to various places such as Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, Mandy made each residence a lovely home.
Mary Amanda Vaughan Garvin died on August 31, 1940 from injuries received in an automobile accident. She was on her way home to Sherman, Grayson, Texas from her daughter Frances' home in Huntington Beach, Orange County, California. Mandy died at Presbyterian Hospital, Albuquerque, Bernadillo County, New Mexico. She is buried at:West Hill Cemetery, Sherman, Grayson Co., Texas.
