Birth: Oct. 22, 1837
East Hartland
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA
Death: Aug. 3, 1897
Keokuk County

Ackley was the son of Thomas and Lydia Miller Beman. He married Mary Jane Garrett on April 13, 1869 in Delta, Iowa. They were the parents of 5 sons that I am aware of; Charles Edwin, Dwight A., Gordon Ackley, Garfied, and Thomas Milton. Ackley enlisted as a 5th Corporal in Co. I, 40th Iowa Infantry on 13 Aug 1862 and served in the Union Army throughout the duration of the Civil War. He participated in several major engagements escaping injury but had his coat shot full of holes in one of the battles. At the time of his mustering out on April 1, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas he was promoted from full 4th Sergeant to full 2nd Lieutenant. He was serving with the 113th U.S. Colored Infantry at the time. He was a farmer and a carpenter.
