Edward Dempsey Brown was born August 30, 1901, in Pauls Valley, Garvin County, Indian Territory. A year after his mother died in 1913, Dempsey's younger brother Ual was sent to live with a half-sister, and Dempsey and his father moved to Tonkawa, Kay County, Oklahoma. After his father died in 1916, Dempsey worked in Tonkawa as a waiter (as of 1920). In 1924 his brother Ual, now nearly 17, joined him in Tonkawa. In 1925 Dempsey married Edna Wilson, of Garvin County, in Oklahoma City. They might have met in Tonkawa, because Edna's married sister Jewell was living there at the time. In 1927 they were living (or visiting) in Blanchard, Garvin County, OK, where Edna's parents lived, and they visited Johnsonville and Byars, OK, where Dempsey had relatives. Around 1928 they moved to Oklahoma City, as did Jewell and her family, Edna's parents, and Dempsey's brother Ual.
In 1930 Dempsey was working for an oil company, like his brother Ual. In 1931 he was manager of Capitol Sewing Machine Exchange. Later he ran a filling station. Around 1939 Dempsey and Edna divorced. In 1941 Dempsey married Maxine "Mickey" Davis. Around 1947 they started a night club, which they ran the rest of their lives. Initially it was called the "Bomb-a-Dear Tap Room" and later the "Third Street Tavern." By 1952 they were known by the nicknames "Jack" and "Mickie." They had no children.
Dempsey died June 28, 1967, aged 65, from “congestive heart failure due to pulmonary emphysema” (COPD).
