Joe Carlos Brown, 80 of Jackson, AL passed away Friday, November 9, 2012, at home. Funeral services were November 12 at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim DuFriend, the Rev. Brady Baird and the Honorable Gaines McCorquadale officiating, Interment followed at Pine Crest Cemetery.
Mr. Brown was born in Century, FL on October 22, 1932, to Jessie Lee Driskell Brown and Ernest Thomas Brown Sr. He graduated Copiah Lincoln Junior College in Wesson in 1952 where he played both football and baseball. Mr. Brown continued his education and graduated from Mississippi Southern University with a Bachelor of Science in biology and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity. After graduation from college he served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Following military service, Mr. Brown taught school for one year at his alma mater, Flomaton High School where he served as assistant football coach and head basketball coach. It was during that time that he met his future wife, Pamela Nicholson, with whom he was happily married for more than 48 years.
In 1961, Mr. Brown and his wife moved to Auburn, AL where he graduated from Auburn University with a degree in pharmacy. Mr. Brown moved to Jackson, AL and became the owner and operator of Brown's Pharmacy of Jackson from 1966 to 1998, where he will always be remembered for his many acts of kindness in helping many residents of Jackson.
An active civic leader in Jackson, he served as a member and past-president of the Jackson Civitan Club, where in 1990, he was recognized and awarded the Civitan Club's "Citizen of the Year". During his spare time, Mr. Brown was active in First Methodist Church of Jackson, serving as a Sunday School Teacher for many years and a member of the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class.
He enjoyed all types of sporting events and frequently attended games at Auburn University and Southern Mississippi. Locally, he was a sponsor of Dixie League Baseball for many seasons. Two of his favorite pastimes were playing basketball where he earned the title "Bloody Joe" for his aggressive play in the lane and riding his bike to work. Mr. Brown will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pam, and his brother, Ernest Thomas Brown, Jr.
He is survived by his five children, Vicki Brown Hearn of Chatom, Andrew Joe (Donna) Brown of Gulfport, Richard David (Lynne) Brown of Jackson, AL, Frank Nicholson (Mandy) Brown of Ruston, LA and Susan Brown (Homer III) Sledge of Cleveland; one sister Doris Brown Thompson of Flomaton AL; twelve grandchildren, Carrie Caylor, Corbin Jordan, Jack Caylor, Anna Hearn, Courtney Brown, David Brown, Alex Brown, Baylee Brown, R J Brown, Brett Brown, Maggie Helene Sledge, Homer Sledge lV. and two great-grandchildren, Sully Ray Harris & Connor Harris.
Pallbearers were Andy Brown, Dick Brown, Jack Caylor, Warren Nicholson, and Tim Anderson.
Honorary pallbearers were Robert Baugh, Irwin Cooper, L. T. McMillian, Richard McMullan, Marion Savage, Walter Brooks, Calvin Syphrit, Al Dykeman, Paul South, Buster James, Jimmy Parker, Billy Allday, Howard Few, Frank Criswell and Alan Steele.
In honor of Mr. Brown, memorials can be made to First Methodist Church, Jackson, AL or United Methodist Children's Home of Montgomery, AL.
St. Stephens Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
