Keith A. Bastian
Birth: 1934
Death: 2002

Keith A. Bastian, 68, of 826 S. Main St., Chippewa Falls, died Friday, September 20, 2002, at his home with the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice after a long battle with cancer.

He was born June 24, 1934, in Brillion to Mildred R. (Bell) and Arno C. Bastian. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree from Wisconsin State University in Oshkosh, he moved to Chippewa Falls, where he taught junior high and middle school social studies from 1956 until retiring in 1990. Upon his retirement, he found fulfilling employment as a clerk at the Book Peddler in Eau Claire for nearly seven years.

Keith married Jean F. Selden of Chippewa Falls on August 1, 1959, at Portage. Two children were born to this union. He was a member of Lake Street United Methodist Church in Eau Claire.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Chippewa Falls; his daughter, Dawn Bastian of Fort Collins, Colo.; his son, Bruce (Mariya) Bastian of Durand; a granddaughter, Natascha Bastian; his brother, William (Clara) Bastian of Chippewa Falls; his aunt, Amanda Wolfmeyer of East Troy; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marian Louise Bastian in infancy.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls, with the Rev. David Blackmer of Lake Street United Methodist Church and the Rev. Fr. Robert Hoekstra, Chaplain of St. Joseph’s Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, town of Hallie.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral chapel.

Keith’s career was inspired by his interest in history, as early as his adolescent years, and by his great-grandfather and teacher, T. Scott Pell of Carbon, Ind. He was proud of his students and often spoke of the pleasures they and his position provided him. He was an avid reader and a wonderful letter writer. He possessed an unusually keen memory and loved to share quotations, trivia and anecdotes that he found.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Keith’s memory to Lake Street Radio Ministry or St. Joseph’s Hospice.
