Mr. Atkinson was born in Orangeburg, a son of the late William Eugene Atkinson and Mary Agnes Holman Atkinson. He was a retired Navy Commander serving in WWII and Korea and retired from the Merchant Marines. Mr. Atkinson was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the Masters Mates and Pilots Club of Maryland. Mr. Atkinson was a great lover of animals and the outdoors with a particular fondness for the water; whether it was his aluminum canoe on Lake Marion to his Naval Cruiser serving in the South Pacific. He and his late wife were avid dancers and together with her were able to live out a lifelong dream of sharing a dance on each of the seven seas.
