William was baptized December 30, 1845 at Kettle, Fifeshire, Scotland. He immigrated to America about 1881, arriving before his wife and children. He settled in Traer, Iowa, where he worked as a farmer. William's family came later, when his daughter, Ann, was three years old and daughter, Charlotte, was only an infant. The family's ship sank off of the coast of Nova Scotia, but they were safely rescued by a British warship.
