Following from "The History of Will County" by George Woodruff: "Thomas Burnet – farmer; P.O. Tamarack; was born in Scotland in 1811 and is the son of James Burnet, a weaver by trade; Mr. Burnet at the age of 12 began to learn his trade – weaver; This business he followed while in Scotland; in 1834 he emigrated to America; he first stopped in Saratoga County New York; here he remained for 1-1/2 years, then west to Michigan, and thence to Connecticut; from Connecticut he returned to New York, and, in 1852 he came west to Will County, IL, here he has remained ever since." (I add here that both Thomas 1811 and his brother James 1808 were "Weavers".)

Mr Burnet was one of the Deacons in the United Presbyterian Church in Wheatland. Married Miss Marion Wyllie of Ayrshire Scotland, by whom they had three children. Mr Burnet owned 105 acres of improved land. He was the cause of naming Tamarak as when he came west, he brought some Tamarak trees with him; these were planted and the present post office Tamarak derived its name from those trees."

See Jessie Burnet (Memorial # 9301607 for additional information).
